Mini-Barracudas

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it?
The "Minis" is a five week program intended to prepare young swimmers for the competitive team. It is no longer considered a learn-to-swim program.
Who should join?
Any child who is at least 5-years-old, who can swim the width of the pool without stopping, and who is interested in eventually being on the regular swim team is encouraged to join. The goal is to develop the skills of new swimmers. They will join the regular swim team program as they improve. If your child can almost swim a length of the pool, they should try out for the regular team.  Minis and 8 and under swimmers will have the opportunity to participate in the Lollipop Swim Meet in late July. In addition, they will be able to swim in kickboard races at some of the Saturday competition meets.
Who is teaching it?
We are planning to hire an experienced coach whose primary focus will be the Mini-Baracudas. Also, we encourage swimmers who are 11 years and older to volunteer to help with the Minis practices.  In order to help with this program, the swimmer needs to attend a mandatory Minis helper training. Dates and times will be announced closer to the trainings.
When is it?
Starts the day after school gets out, and runs through the day of the Lollipop Meet in late July . Practices are Monday through Friday in the morning, and Tuesdays and Thursdays in the late afternoon
What does it cost?
Since this is part of the swim team, the fee is just the same as if you were joining the swim team and depends on how many other children are part of the team. Please see the swim team registration page for details.
What if my 4-year old can already swim the width of the pool?
The Swim Team Rep will consider allowing 4-year olds to join the program if they can swim across the pool and if they can easily separate from their parents for the 30-minute program. This will be on a case-by-case basis.
My child can't comfortably swim the width of the pool. Are there any options for teaching him?
We are hoping to be able to offer an organized, learn-to-swim program for children as a stepping stone to the Minis. This program will be taught by the same coach who will teach the Mini-Barracudas. In addition, private swim lessons are always available for a fee. We prefer that members use the coaching staff for their learn-to-swim lessons, as this is one of the benefits we offer the coaches. However, if the coaches are not the right "fit" for your child or circumstances, you may be able to take advantage of offers from other pool members or from the life guard staff.
